Newly Graduated Nurses

We welcome newly graduated nurses into our hospital through the RN Internship/Residency Program and admit new graduates into this program three times per year in the winter, summer and fall.

New grads can start their careers in all specialty areas including Medical/Surgical, Cardiovascular, Neurosciences, Oncology, Critical Care, Emergency Care, Psychiatry, and Women’s Services.

The GW Hospital nurse residency program combine lectures, e-learning, and hands on-skills lab experience with a clinical application in an acute care setting. Each intern is paired with an experienced RN preceptor in the clinical area.

At the conclusion of the internship nurses begin the Nurse Residency Program as our goal is to achieve a successful and smooth transition for the new nurse. This one-year program is designed to assist the nurse in his/her continued development. The program includes monthly classes, debriefing sessions, and evidence-based project, and Nurse Residency Coordinator oversight.

New grad RNs MUST have taken their NCLEX and passed before the start of the program. It is strongly recommended to sit for a DC RN license when registering to take your boards.

Sign On Bonus: $10,000 for Med Surg & Telemetry Units / $7,500 for Specialty Units

Requirements:

• GPA of 3.0 or greater from an accredited NLN or AACN RN program
• BSN or enrollment and completion of BSN in 5 years
• Unofficial transcript
• Current CPR Certification by AHA or ARC

Emergency Department Nurses

When you see an average of 200 patients every day, treating cardiac arrest, brain attack and a variety of traumas are all in a day's work. Come explore an environment in which every day—and every case—is different.

We anticipate thousands of patients will come through the doors of our ED every year and require some kind of immediate attention. These will include area residents and visitors to the nation's capital; heads of state and heads of households. They will all be treated by innovative and independent critical thinkers who excel individually—and collectively—to care for our diverse patient population.

We are a Level One trauma center and among a handful of hospitals in the DC area to be growing in terms of patients treated and services provided. We have six critical care treatment areas, two trauma bays and 37 treatment areas that will soon expand to 45 areas.

Women's Services

Labor and Delivery

We provide clinically advanced, personalized childbirth services, including natural childbirths with midwifery, a strong doula program, water births, Cesarean births, and high-risk births.

Mother/Baby

Our empathetic nurses support mothers in breastfeeding, bonding and learning how to care for their babies with such offerings as a Respite Nursery, lactation support, birth registrar and notary, and HALO Bassinets.

Neonatal Intensive Care Unit

The dedicated nurses and neonatal providers from Children’s National provide high-quality, family-centered care in a Level III NICU for critically ill or premature infants.

• D-gel for hypoglycemia
• Donor milk
• Whole baby cooling
• Administration of IV fluids
• Continuous cardiorespiratory monitoring
• Mechanical ventilation, including high-frequency oscillation

Medical Surgical Nursing

Provide care for patients after Virtual Reality Surgery, after use of daVinci surgical system, and advanced robotic surgery techniques.

• Collaborates care across disciplines to ensure competent and compassionate care of patients.
• Opportunities for education and certification in oncology specific topics, such as stem cell transplant.
• Integrates a patient-centric care which addresses each patient’s unique challenges and needs.
• Integrates a patient centered approach involving the patient and family into the plan of care.
• Opportunity for career advancement with our clinical progression ladder as trauma nurse, triage nurse, preceptor and charge nurse.

Critical Care

The Center for Trauma and Critical Care at The George Washington University Hospital provides premier care to severely injured and critically ill patients for 75 miles surrounding the Greater Washington, DC metropolitan area. GW offers quarternary-level support to surrounding hospitals that seek advice or help in the management of severely injured or critically ill patients.
